More details emerge about Apple’s plans for AI in iOS 18
Apple CEO Tim Cook has hinted at the imminent arrival of AI features, with a recent report from AppleInsider shedding light on what users can expect in the upcoming version of iOS. Among the anticipated enhancements, Siri is set to undergo significant improvements, particularly in its ability to analyze and summarize text within the Messages app.
Previously mentioned as part of an “Intelligent Search” feature for Safari in iOS 18, users can look forward to the ability to summarize web pages seamlessly. These advancements will be powered by Apple’s large language model (LLM), dubbed Ajax. Notably, Apple has been actively researching on-device AI processing for iPhones, a direction that aligns with the reported features.
According to the report, Ajax will leverage on-device processing for generating simple responses. However, for more complex queries, the system may need to interact with external servers. It’s speculated that Apple is exploring partnerships with Google and OpenAI to bolster its AI capabilities, especially for handling intricate requests.
Privacy remains a top priority for Apple, with the company reportedly set to implement privacy warnings before Ajax utilizes data from Safari or Messages. During a recent earnings call, Cook expressed optimism about Apple’s AI endeavors, hinting at forthcoming announcements. He emphasized Apple’s unique advantages, including an unwavering commitment to privacy, which sets its AI features apart.
